CEO Update

June 29, 2020

Colleagues,

Some positive signals as the PMI for the month of May has risen to 41.6 from 35.8 in the previous month. Whilst COVID-19 restrictions have certainly impacted demand for manufactured products, we are seeing some demand increasing for this month, except for exports. May it continue to improve!

I’m pleased with the announced investments and focus by the Government to assist in the nation’s economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. The focus has been in multiple sectors and multiple geographies which suggests reason for confidence. I expect major local infra projects and on-shoring work that was being done overseas, will assist Australian and New Zealand Manufacturing significantly in the months and years ahead.

At Headland, we continue to operate at full strength with our service, parts, and sales team, whilst practicing all the measures which have kept us safe. Whilst machine sales slowed significantly in the last quarter, we are now seeing some healthy demand signals for innovation from clients who have elected to get ready and get ahead. Especially given any new machine projects usually means several months of planning and preparation prior to installation.

The month of July will see our internal operational excellence programs continue in earnest. We are excited to welcome back Robert Carrot to Headland. Additionally, Paul Lovegrove joins Robert Carrott in taking up the two newly created positions of Resource Planning Managers for CNC and Sheet Metal solutions respectively. These national roles are designed to give our clients a superior first contact experience when reaching Headland for service. That critical first call will now have a highly qualified technician process the service request to ensure the right skills are assigned to the case. They will focus on despatch of engineers with the right tools and the right skills to achieve a higher percentage of repair is completed at first visit (where possible). You can expect to see this new model in full operation before the end of July.

When I write to you next I will also be happy to elaborate on improvements we are making in the Application Specialist team. We are fortunate to now have five Applications experts at Headland across Australia and New Zealand. The continuing rise of software as an important element of any manufacturing enterprise, is in our sights as an area where we can support and enable innovation for many of our client. And enabling innovation which delivers competitive advantage for our clients is amongst our highest priorities.

Please all continue to keep safe and don’t hesitate to call me at any time with feedback or simply to share notes on the industry that we’re all passionate about.
