What is Abrasivejet Cutting?

Abrasivejet cutting technology provides higher hydraulic power at the nozzle and better jet stream control. With this combination, you will be able to accurately cut complex geometries and corners with efficiency and speed.

First finding their industrial use in the early 1970s and quickly gaining popularity as an alternative to costly knives and metal cutters, waterjets have the capability to work with pressures between 40,000 and 60,000 pounds per square inch (psi), and can cut through a range of materials from food products to cardboard.

Birth of the abrasivejet cutter

While waterjets were ideal for soft materials, they weren’t adequate to machine harder materials. It wasn’t until the 1980s when garnet abrasives were added to the water stream – and the abrasivejet cutting system was born.

Mixing the garnet through aspiration, the new abrasive laden stream was now able to cut harder materials such as titanium, aluminium, glass and ceramic while reducing noise and dust distractions.

Technology

OMAX abrasive waterjets offer:

  • Fastest precision cutting in the industry due to direct drive plunger pumps
  • OMAX standard mixing tube has a 0.030″ (0.75 mm) inside diameter and is 4″ (10 cm) long
  • Features a smaller bore and longer length than the more common 0.040″ (0.35 mm) diameter by 3″ (7.5 cm) long tube used by most abrasivejet system manufacturers

Clean your nozzles

All abrasivejet systems use the same basic two-stage nozzle design where water passes through a small diameter jewel orifice forming a narrow jet and mixing with abrasives.

Regardless of the brand of nozzle, all nozzles must be kept clean when being overhauled. For maximum mixing tube life, a small ultrasonic cleaner should be used to ensure the nozzle body is free of all contaminants.

Treat water properly

Water quality and cooling is vital. Maintaining good quality water will ensure the longest mixing tube life. The quality of water used by any abrasive waterjet plays the most critical role in extending the life of critical components such as nozzle orifices, on off valves, seals, check valves and plungers.

To perform high quality cutting, the orifice needs to create a high quality jet that is directed through the center of the mixing tube. Contaminates in the water can create a multitude of problems for the orifice.

A by product of increased pressure is heat, so cooling your water down is also important as warm water can cause more wear on the pump. OMAX’s Chiller Systems are a way to keep your temperature down.
