Headland interviews David Bruce, Manager of Allcon Steel Construction, on their recent purchase of the Ocean Avenger Beam Line machine.
Allcon Steel Construction, based on Wangara, Western Australia, didn’t even know they needed an Ocean Avenger Beam Line, until they saw what a difference it could make to their business.
Their business turns over 160 Tonne per month and they used to do things by hand, “we used to process things with boilermakers doing the layout and marking by hand and a magnetic drill, this is the only CNC machine we have in our factory.
“When we actually calculated the time the process took and what it was costing the business we realised that the purchase of the new machine would not only increase our rate of volume and accuracy of production, but also save us a lot of money. We can drill holes now in less than 10 seconds, whereas before it used to take more than ten times that, dependent upon the thickness of the steel.”
Allcon Steel Construction produces structural steel components for local and commercial shopping centres, factories and also the mining industry. “You would think that a lot more work would be coming in from the mining industry, however, we are finding that the large fabrication work is going offshore to China. I foresee a lot more work will actually come from the downstream industries benefiting from the mining boom”.
The good thing about the Ocean Avenger is that it’s easy to operate, “We haven’t had any issues with training our existing floor staff on how to use it, it feels as though it’s just fitted in to our factory, the right timing and the right machine for our business”, David Bruce says.
